PHIL FARRAND BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

The son of missionaries, Phil Farrand spent his formative years in the Republic of the Philippines. After returning to the United States, he earned bachelor degrees in piano performance and sacred music--a composition and arranging degree. While working as a music editor, Phil became frustrated with the "paper dance" involved in printed music production. He worked for two years and authored a music notation package for the Apple II computer which later became Polywriter.

Several years later, Phil --working with Coda Music Technology--created a complete high-end desktop publishing software package for music notation called Finale. Finale quickly became, and remains, a global standard in desktop music notation software.

Wanting to return to the creative arts, and being a die-hard fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Phil decided to write a fun-loving critique--a book that would detail the goofs, gaffs and blunders of America's favorite television science fiction program. Often described as a "slightly lunatic fan with way too much time on his hands," Phil brings a playful perspective to a program that usually takes itself a bit too seriously with The Nitpicker's Guide for Next Generation Trekkers.

Because of the book's gratifying reception in the Trek community, Phil went back, spent another four an one half months watching the original series and created The Nitpicker's Guide for Classic Trekkers. Then, with the conclusion of Star Trek: The Next Generation as a television series, Phil authored a new book called The Nitpicker's Guide for Next Generation Trekkers, Volume II. It contains reviews of the seventh and last season of NextGen, a review of Star Trek Generations and all new nits covering the first six seasons of NextGen, taken from selected portions of the thousands of letters sent in by members of the Nitpicker's Guild. His latest release is The Nitpicker's Guide for Deep Space Nine Trekkers. It covers the first four seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Currently, Phil is writing the first non-Trek Nitpicker's Guide: The Nitpicker's Guide for X-Philes. Covering the first four seasons of the very popular television series, The X-Files, it will be released December 1, 1997.
