Speed 2: Cruise Control

7/7/97 Update

(Note from Phil: Haven't seen this movie so no plot summary and no brash reflections from me but no doubt more nitpickers will pick nits so I thought I'd start a file.)

Reflections from the Guild

[Note from Phil: I have not verified these but they sounded good to me!]

Brian Straight: First of all I feel that this movie is pale in comparison to the origonal. In the first movie I was on the edge of my seat with antcipitation, and in a "what's going to happen next?!" frame of mind. In this movie I just sat back, and ate my nachos.

On to the nits:

I'm really disapointed in the crew of the Seabourn Legend (the ship that is held hostage).

Annie and Alex's bellhop (I think his name was Ashtin) is polite, friendly, and courtious, and has a happy-go-lucky-condensending-you-need-to-be-pampered way of speaking, up until the point where he is ready to leave Annie's cabin. As he's leaving he mentions how he knows they will give him a generous gratuity at the end of the voyage. Call me old-fashioned, but isn't considered rude to count your tip, or even mention one, infront of the tipper?

The wacko (Geiger was his name, again I think) positons the bombs one the eve of the first day, he seizes the ship on the second night of the cruise. This means that the ship went through an entire day with these bombs throughout the ship! The crew never saw them? They never opened a hatch, removed a panel, or anything like that to run maintanance on the ship?! For a whole day!

Geiger also manages to put a bug in the bridge (which makes a constant beeping noise) which the crew NEVER notices!

Towards the end, as the ship crashes into a dock, Ashtin and Dante (ship's photographer) sound the ship's ouboard P.A. to warn away the boaters in the harbor. Dante even tells them to abandon their ships, which they do. Wouldn't this cause them to be sucked under ship and into the propeller? Like what happened to so many others in the movie?

During the evacuation, granted they are in a hurry, they leave behind a group of people trapped in a sealed off hallway, and the pleas of a mother missing her child. All they can say about this is "We're sure she's on a lifeboat" they say this just as they walk by the elevator she's trapped in. She's pounding on the sidesof the elevator car, and the elevator alarm is going off, and they ignore it!

Why is Alex the only who notices this "Sulfur based smoke".

Given the above, I don't think I'll be frequenting Seabourn cruise lines anytime soon.

The crew of the oil tanker wasn't very smart either. A cruise ship is barreling towards them, with the gang way loward, a lifeboat hanging off the side, and the otherlife boats missing, Speaking of which what happened to the lifeboats that got away? Did they get to land, and tell someone that the Legend was in distress?

Amazing how the elevator car was just as wide as Drew was tall. Also amazing how she could lay down, walk up the elevator car, poke her head up the emergency hatch, and climb out, which I would LOVE to know how she did that considering she needed her arms and legs to stay that high in the car. Also later we see Drew climbing down the shaft and out the doors, she somehow managed to get below the car and into the bowels of the ship (near the ballast doors). Did she get out on a higher deck, walk around to another elevator shaft, open it, and climb down to the bottom of the ship?!

Alex was a little to Jackish. (Keanu Reeves' character from the first movie).

I think Annie's only purpose in the movie was for "the babe factor" seeing as how she does nothing to help anybody, or the plot of the movie. She seems to have lost some of her bravado from the first movie. And her driving skills!

Not a nit, but an observation. Did anybody notice the bus Annioe almost hits at the end was bus "2526" (or was it "2626"), funny seeing as how the bus in the first movie was "2525".

About that scene, obviously it was cut from the opening teaser. Annie is wearing the same outfit, and style of hair, as the begining, and her sunglasses hang from the rearview mirror, which we see her put on in the begining. So the creators cut this sceen from the beging and just stuck it to the end? I guess it was for the "well we got you out of your seat, but wait there's more!" factor.

Whenever somebody to talks to drew, they make the classic movie nit. When Alex or Drew's parents speak to her (she's deaf) in sign language, they at the same time speak outloud what they are saying. Same goes with when drew signs back to them! Now I have see many-a deaf people in the store where I work, and all they do is fly around with sign laguage, they do not talk out loud at the same time! (Note from Phil: Well . . . there's a deaf church that meets concurrently at our church during our services and some do talk and sign at the same time! And, yes, it is called a deaf church not a hearing-impaired church. The attendees called it what *thay* wanted to call it!)

7/7/97 Update

Bob Sabatini: I saw the last five minitues of Speed 2, and in that time, I caught TWO nits. First- There was nothing restraning Annie when she was underwater (that I could see), so all she needed to do was kick once and she would be up Second- Why was that man (I don't know his name, and i'm too lazy to look it up) kissing her underwater!?!?!?!? That was the ultimite in CBS moments.
