THIS WEEK AT NITCENTRAL

Sunday, June 8, 1997

First of all, I had a brain cramp last week and announced the wrong day for the server upgrade for the kind folks at dialus.com who provide my internet connection. They will be upgrading their server from 12:00 am to 8:00 AM on Monday, June 9, 1997. Because of this, NCEIO will be off-line for those hours.

It's all over but the proofreading! The final chunk of The Nitpicker's Guide for X-philes went back to Kathleen on Thursday, she handed it off to copy-edit on Friday which means that the manuscript has officially been accepted by Dell! Yea! Still a few months before it hits the bookstore shelves sometime in mid to late November but my part is almost done!

I think that I am ready to officially predict that Batman and Robin will be a horrific bomb! Alicia Silverstone was on David Letterman last week and though it usually comes on past me bedtime, I happened to still be awake to watch her interview. Of course, Letterman played a clip from the movie and . . . it was awful! I mean . . . stinko! Now, usually, creators want to play their best stuff to entice viewer to come see the movie--and perhaps once I see the scene in context with the rest of the movie it won't be so bad--but if that's the "best" scene Silverstone has in the movie . . . well . . . let's just say that she's not going to get any Oscar nominations for her part! (Here's hoping that the creators surprise me!)

Bruce Felkins sent along an interesting little tidbit this week: "In the interview with Alfre Woodard inside the most recent Communicator magazine, she describes an incident where when threatening Picard with a phaser at the wrong intensity setting, Frakes makes her re-do the take. She of course asks how in the world anyone would notice such a small thing on camera. Frakes told her "there are people out there" who care whether the phaser is on the correct setting or not!!! I wonder who he was refering to :)"

Arrh maties, there be nitpickers out there!

As usual, I have had several replies bounce back to me over the last few weeks. If you see your name on this list, drop me a line and let's see what went wrong when I tried to write back!

Francesco [Last Name Unknown]
Dan McClintock
Todd Metz

A small exhortation: I realize that some have begun altering the return address on the email messages that they send. I also realize that "netizens" do this to avoid the "auto-skimmers" that pick up addresses from newsgroups and use them to compile a mailing list that is then subjected to junk advertising. However, I simply do not have the time to scrutinize the return address of every message that I get to see if I should alter it in some way to make sure the reply gets back to the original sender. Ideally, it would be nice if the return addresses sent to me were valid so that I could just hit the Reply button, dash off a "Thanks for the input!" (which I feel it only courteous) and go on to the next message. I do realize, though, that I do not live in an ideal world and will no doubt have many more messages bounce back to me in the future because I didn't notice that my fellow nitpicker had added an "x" or a "y" or a whatever to their mail address.

Therefore, in the future, if a reply bounces back to me because of an intentionally scrambled return address, I am going to delete the reply from my queue and trundle on with my life! If then, you send me a message and do not get an acknowledgment from me, one possibility might be that I just didn't want to take the time to figure out your valid email address! ;-) 'Nuff said.

Upload a Brash Reflection for The Lost World as well as uploaded new nits for The Fifth Element and the Voyager episodes Worst Case Scenario and Scorpion. (Absolutely the last week for Voyager episode--unless something really amazing comes in!)

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: The Brash Reflections for the third season of Voyager are officially frozen. However, you may feel free to send in additional nits for the episodes. I will keep the information for future reference and possible inclusion in a Voyager Nitpicker's Guide. Also frozen are Trials and Tribble-ations and Star Trek: First Contact. Along with all movies that aired prior to the Summer of 1996. (I am, of course, still collecting nits on these movies as well. You never know. There just might be a project where I can use them. And, I just might be starting it in the near future!)

Hadn't updated the Groaners or The Writer's Construction Kit in a year so I thought I'd do those! (Last week, I finally uploaded a new version of the Nitpickers Guild Glossary! Yea!! I took a new direction with this update. The Glossary had swollen too much in size for it's own good. I relegated the entries that didn't quite ring my bell to a Secondary Nitpickers Guild Glossary. Also I began a list of the submissions that weren't included in the primary glossary called the Pending Entries for the Nitpickers Guild Glossary so that you, my fellow nitpickers can enjoy the terms that were submitted but didn't quite make the cut!)
