April's Fool
Fumblings and Rumblings With The Drew Carey Show April Fools Contest

Latest Update

Have you ever had one of those days when you discover that you've been stupid? And you know that you've been stupid? And you know that you didn't have to be stupid? But you were stupid anyway?! I had one of those days yesterday (4/24/98). And I thought I would go ahead and document my stupidity in the hope that next time that I find myself in similar circumstances, I'll acquit myself better! (Call it penance, if you will.) I mentioned in This Week At Nitcentral (4/19/98) that I had entered the Drew Carey Show April Fool Contest. Well, yesterday, I think I figured out that I had been stupid and pretty much cost myself any chance to win! The saga follows . . .

A Diary of Events

Prior to April 1, 1998

My first exposure to the possibility of the contest came as my daughter and I sat on the floor in front of the television playing Phase 10. I wasn't paying much attention to the drone from the set and would have probably shut the silly thing off but my wife and daughter wanted to watch the Academy Awards. At the edges of my perception, I registered something about a contest but let it slide. I'm not much for contests normally because they are based on chance--and usually outrageous chance--to win so . . . what's the point. I do recall, however, my daughter grinning at me and saying something like, "There ya go!"

Then, I received the following email from Aaron Nadler: Hey, Phil! Did you catch the commertial during the Acadamy Awards the other night? You can win $25,000 for catching all the mistakes (the intentional mistakes) on the April 1st episode of "The Drew Carey Show"!! You could win 2 and a half grand for doing what you do best! Whoever sends in the most mistakes will win! Good luck!"

Cash for nitpicking! Hmmm. That sounded a bit more interesting. Of course, I'm not a Drewhead. I knew that would be a problem but as I started to pay attention to the commercials, I realized that this might be something that would be fun to try. Hey, it was $25,000! (And yes, I know that Aaron made a slight bubble when he called it two and a half grand but who wants to be a nitpicker! ;-)

So . . . I started amassing what resources I could on the show. For the three nights leading up to the April 1 episode, I taped ABC primetime to snag all the commercials for the episode. I download all the pictures from the Official Drew Carey website. (They had kindly provided a study guide.) What I did not do was download the episode guide and read through it. There's something about my version of Microsoft Explorer that interacts badly with the ABC website and it gives me dozens of "Do You Want This 'Cookie'" messages. It's really obnoxious and perhaps I could say it directly contributed to my disinterest in spending anymore time than I had to on the site but in the final analysis, I was the one who was stupid! And this stupidity will come back to haunt me.

I also tried to locate other websites for the Drew Carey Show but found few. (I'm used to Trek and X-files. Which, of course, is a bad comparison!)

Anyway, by this time, I thought that entering the contest would be a fun exercise but the chances of winning were slim since . . . I don't watch the show! And you really, really have to be a fan of a creative endeavor to nitpick it well. But . . . hey . . . it was $25000!

Wednesday, April 1, 1998

I taped the episode. And in the days following made my work copy. Gathered a few more resources and settled in to nitpick. I can't recall exactly what held up the nitpicking but my schedule was crazy for the next week or so after the airing. I had stuff every night and my weekends were jammed. I did finally go out to the ABC website and read the rules. I had until April 17 to submit my entry. That was good because I needed the time! I also noted that the only valid nitpicks will be the ones that match the Official Producers List. Sounds like the same routine: The creators get to make the rules!

Wednesday, April 8, 1998

I taped another episode of the Drew Carey Show and watched it just to give myself some familiarity with the characters and setting.

Friday, April 10, 1998

I finally have my decks cleared enough to get started. My daughter wanted to help so we putter down to my office in the basement and spent something like two hours working on the first seven minutes! This is going to take longer than I thought! At the beginning of the episode, Drew says that there are at least 50 mistakes. I immediately took that to mean that there were probably 100 but by this point in this nitpicking excursion, I'm thinking that there are going to be at least 150.

Saturday-Monday, April 11-13, 1998

Grabbing time where I can, I get through the rest of the show. It's a big list and it's been squeezed in between getting my taxes together but I'm feeling fairly comfortable. The Drew Carey people have done a great job mixing all kinds of different mistakes into the episode. Some very subtle, some very blatant. (At least, that's what I thought at the time.) I'm starting to feel good about this!

Tuesday, April 14, 1998

Knowing the deadline is approaching, I decide to take a day off, do some more nitpicking, formalize my entry, and get it ready to mail. I can submit either via the post office or via email and since I don't really trust either I decide to do both and call the post office submission a "confirmation copy" of the email. I'm only supposed to enter the contest once but, hopefully, they won't disqualify me!

When it's all said and done, I have 194 items on my list. I'm pretty sure that a few are bogus. And there are several that won't be on the Official Producers' List. But it's still a big list and if nothing else, I had a blast doing it.

(Unfortunately, those 194 items made me a tad too confident. There were a few additional items that I had questions over but . . . I and my daughter had found 194! Some of them fairly subtle. It was a good entry and Tax Day was upon me and I needed to get back to the Star Wars Guide and, and, and . . . I let myself slide. I was ready to be done.)

Wednesday, April 15, 1998

Without bothering to check the entry form for email submissions on the Drew Carey Website, I mail the postal version of my entry--along with my tax forms--in the morning using overnight delivery with a return receipt. (I figure I'll give the post office an extra day and the return receipt will tell me when it actually gets picked up!)

That evening, I hop on a friend's computer because he has a different version of Explorer--intending to submit my email version of my list--and for the first time see the actual entry form. Hmmmm. All the normal boiler plate information (name, address . .) but the actual nits must each be describe with one line of text, one line per box and there are only 125 boxes. This is when I frowned.

Only 125?! Okay granted, I knew some of the stuff on my list wouldn't correlate to the Official Producers List but to get my list down to 125 would require some interesting collapsing. For instance, there's a clock on the office wall that starts out the show without hands, then it gets hands, then it loses its hands, then it gets them back--and the time is the same as it was when the clock previously got back its hands--and finally the clock loses its hands yet again! Now, to me, that's six different items. But, apparently, according to the creators, that has to be only one because that's the only way I can get my list down to 125. Okay, that's fine. Whatever. They're the creators. They get to make the rules!

I decide not to submit an email entry. But now . . . those few items that I should have checked on? Now, they're starting to haunt me. Missing a couple out of 194 is one thing. Missing a couple out of 125? Hmmm.

Saturday, April 18, 1998

Just for the fun of it, I check the Drew Carey Show website. There were almost 300,000 entries! Yikes! I tell my daughter, "Do you realize that if we're found more of the nits than 99% percent of the people who submitted that still means that there will be three thousand people who found more than us!?!"

Those items that I let pass are starting to gnaw at me. There are lots of smart people out there. To have a chance at winning this thing, I had to be perfect. (Vulcan-like in logic, Borg-like in persistance) I should have found a way to check the ones I let pass.

The good news is that the Official Producers List will be posted on Monday, April 20. Or, so the website says.

Monday, April 20, 1998

No list.

Tuesday, April 21, 1998

Now the website says that the list will be posted along with the winners. (Grumble, grumble.) But . . . the winners are supposed to be posted sometime around April 24 so that's only a few days and then we'll see.

Friday, April 24, 1998

This is the day that I discover I was stupid.

There's still no winner posted on the website but the creators have evidently decided to milk this contest for all its worth as far as publicity goes. After all, they did have 300,000 entrants (and probably a lot of those were email). How do you increase your website traffic? You don't announce the winners. You don't post the list. You dribble the list out a little bit each day until May 20 when the winners will be announced. Arrrgh!

Not coincidentally--I'm sure--May 20 is the date of the season finale for the Drew Carey Show. It wouldn't surprise me if they actually announce the winners during the episode. It makes excellent marketing sense! I'm really a bit suprised that the creators didn't plan to do this from the beginning!

Then my eyes land on a link on the Drew Carey website. "Episodes," it says. There's an episode guide on the Drew Carey website?! How could I possibly miss the fact that there's an EPISODE GUIDE on the website. I read through the listing and now I know that I've been stupid! The information was there all the time to answer two of those nits that I ignored! Arrrgh! That means that I missed at least two!

And it gets better, the website also informs that the Official Producers List has . . . . (drumroll, please) . . . only ninety-six items!

Ninety-six?! Only ninety-six?! Something very odd is going on.

I start to do some figuring. If I cut out all the nits where I thought they were just trying to be subtle and keep only the blatant stuff, I can get my list down to 84. With the two I missed, that makes 86. Now, to do this, I'm also collapsing stuff that makes no sense to collapse. For instance, Nigel Wick's office door reads, "Franklin Roosevelt" at first. Then, "Nigel Wick." Then "Mr. Bell." Then "George Washington." And the picture over Mimi's desk goes from "Dogs Playing Poker" to a graduation picture to another picture to the Mona Lisa! At my "86" count all those would be only two items but in my opinion, those should be seven items, if not eight. But maybe the creators counted them afterall and my "87" count should be 91 or 92.

That's would mean that I must have missed between four and ten more things. Perhaps. But this doesn't seem likely!

And, in reality, it's probably all mute at this point anyway because, I WAS STUPID! I should have seen the episode guide, I should have read it and I should have gotten those extra two nits. The really bad thing about them is that they are nits that *any* Drewhead would recognize immediately! So, my original assessment is holding. You really have to be a fan of a show to nitpick it well!

Saturday, April 25, 1998

I decide to start this file. As long as the creators are going to dribble out the information, I might as well submit myself to the Death of a Thousand Nits--slowly twisting in the wind as I watch all this work go up in flames! (I'm just joking. I'm really not that upset about all this. It was fun to do no matter what happens!)

I figure, I'll upload my list. Everyday mark the ones that have been confirmed as well as the one that I miss along with my guess for the ones that are absolutes, probables, possibles. The rest are either collapsible or unlikely or not nits to begin with!

Tuesday, April 28, 1998

Aaargh! Well . . . remember that I said there were a few items that I just let pass? As of today, it's a clean sweep! The goof revealed on the Official Drew Carey Website was the insertion of stock Chicago footage in one of the breaks. I stared at that footage for some time and wondered but I've never been to Cleveland so who am I to say it doesn't have tall buildings?! I should have "foo-fooed" it. (The same thing that I did with a few of the others.) I should have done something like, "Since when did Cleveland get that many skyscrapers?!"

That makes three I've missed. (Although, only one is confirmed at this point.) At least from now on, any that I miss will be genuine "misses" on my part and not something that I could have gotten had I not been stupid! I take some comfort in knowing that I have now floated to the top of my "maximus ignoramus" setting. ;-)

Wednesday, April 29, 1998

Oh man, oh man, oh man. I'm about to rescind my "chiefdom" of the Nitpickers Guild! ;-) I missed the gaff that was revealed today as well! (Big grin) This is getting so embarrassing that it's hilarious! In the middle of the show, the creators put in an announcement and mispelled the word "airplanes" as "airplains" and I completely missed it! This is truly unbelievable! ;-) I think I was trying too hard to find subtle stuff.

So . . . you remember when I said I didn't think it was likely that I had missed four to ten more things?! Well, I just may have!

Thursday, April 30, 1998

Okay, so now things are starting to get interesting. Today's reveal gaff is the Mona Lisa hanging over Mimi's desk. (Surprise, surprise, I got that one! Yea!) Note: the gaff specifically identifies the Mona Lisa as a gaff. This leads me to believe that a different painting hanging there would be interpreted as a different gaff!

So . . . where I previously counted all the paintings over Mimi's desk as one gaff in my "MUST-BE" designation, I am now inclined to count them as four gaffs--since there are four different pictures. And, I am inclined to count the changing names on Nigel Wick's door as seperate incidents as well. (In this case, instead of one "MUST-BE," it becomes three "MUST-BE"s.) I have altered the listing accordingly.

In other words, I'm estimating that I have guessed the contents 93 out of the 96 gaffs listed on the Official Producers Lists. But, but, but . . . there are six more BLATANT continuity problems in the episode--and I do mean BLATANT--that aren't a part of those 93: The Rotation Newspaper, The Migrating Pen, The Rotating Can of Cheese, The Flipping Potato Chip Bag, Mimi's Disappearing/Reappearing In-Box and Drew's Water-Stained Tie.

Six more Highly Possibles when I already have 93 "CONFIRMED" or "MUST-BE"s and there's only 96 total?! Must be that new math!

Friday, May 1, 1998

Today's reveal goof was the popcorn machine in place of the water cooler. (Got this one too! Surprise, surprise. ;) My question is: Will the burned out light bulb in the water cooler be listed as well? Hmm?! The first time we see the popcorn machine it's lit from the inside. Yet, only twenty seconds later we catch the corner of the machine over a guy's shoulder and we can see that the interior of the popcorn maker has darkened! Shouldn't this be considered a gaff as well? (Somehow, I don't expect this to be on the Official Producers List and I have not included it in my "MUST-BEs," "Probables," or even "Possibles"! ;-)

Saturday, May 2, 1998

Okay! It's the weekend and apparently that means the same thing that it meant last weekend: The creators have taken off to party and set up a batch file to automate the uploading of the "Gaffs Revealed" files for the next few days. And . . . it also means that a bit of dorking around on the Official Drew Carey Site nets us not only the revealed-gaff for today but for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday as well! Cool, huh? So I thought I would go ahead and upload them today and save myself some work. This way I won't have to upload this file again until Wednesday! ;-)

Today's gaff is, 155. Contract-o-matic and Expand-o-matic Screens 00:22:29

As for the others . . .

Revealed 5/3/98: 001. Mimi's Pals: Dilbert and Dogbert 00:01:07
Revealed 5/4/98: 019. "Bear"ing the Mail 00:02:54
Revealed 5/5/98: 027. Drew and Kate In Drew's Office 00:04:28

Here's what's interesting. The last one was only on my probable list. It looks like at this point that the major continuity gaffs WILL NOT be on the Official Producers List. My guess is they just happened during the multiple takes that were required to make the episode work! But, then again, we won't know until we have the rest of the list.

Tuesday, May 5, 1998

(Drumroll please!)

And now, Proud Members of the Nitpickers Guild, it's time for the latest and most astounding predictions from none other that the Chief Nitpicker of the Nitpickers Guild, the Amazing Nitwit!

The Amazing Nitwit knows all, The Amazing Nitwit sees all. The Amazing Nitwit will now amaze you with his highly accurate predictions for the gaffs that the Official Drew Carey Show Website will reveal over the course of the next eleven--count 'em, eleven--days! It's incredible. It's astounding. And only at the Nitpicker Central Internet Extension Office will you find it. Only here will you be thus amazed. For only here will you hear the ruminations of the Amazing Nitwit. (Cymbal crash!)

And now, I, the Amazing Nitwit, predict that the gaffs revealed on the Official Drew Carey Show Website will be as follows:

Revealed 5/6/98: 030. "Carey" Mispelled "Carry" 00:04:37
Revealed 5/7/98: 043. Hi Mom! 00:07:21
Revealed 5/8/98: 041. The Haunted House 00:07:08
Revealed 5/9/98: 044. Men On The Moon 00:07:21
Revealed 5/10/98: 007. "Dogs Playing Poker" Painting 00:01:36
Revealed 5/11/98: 058. Lewis's Mustache 00:08:03
Revealed 5/12/98: 055. Productor Consejero 00:07:53
Revealed 5/13/98: XXX. Ice Cream? 00:09:22
Revealed 5/14/98: 078. Speedy The Pig 00:09:46
Revealed 5/15/98: 070. The Man In The Window 00:09:24
Revealed 5/16/98: 090. Oswald's Changing Face 00:10:40

The Amazing Nitwit must confess a bit of confusion over his prediction for 5/13/98. The vision that the Amazing Nitwit had for this day was a bit unclear. He cannot immediately determine what the gaff is in the vision. (No doubt this is due to the fact that the Amazing Nitwit is not a Drewhead.) So, the Amazing Nitwit assumes that the gaff is the fact that the inside of the beer cooler is labelled "Ice Cream" or the fact that the label is no longer in the center of the cooler lid. Only time will reveal how the accuracy of the Amazing Nitwit's prediction but so far the Amazing Nitwit is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT ACCURATE!

Thursday, May 7, 1998

I wasn't going to do an update for some time since I already know what gaffs will be revealed over the next nine days (see above), but last night's Drew Carey Show episode had a passing mention of the corporate big-wigs in Amsterdam. For my money, this pretty much confirmed that the corporate headquarters is in Amsterdam not Kyoto--as stated in the April Fools episode. So that one should probably be a "MUST-BE". Problem is . . . I've also reconsidered the "Poles In The Sink" entry. My nitpicking buddy, Darrin Hull, correctly identified them as pool cues. That gaff should probably be a "MUST-BE" on my list as well. Unfortunately, that means that my combined CONFIRMED/CONFIRMED-MISSES/UNCOMFIRMED-MISSES/MUST-BE list now has ninety-seven items! Hmmmm.

The Official Producers List only has ninety-six. Hmmmm.

By the way, there was a fascinating bit of "creator-centricity" in the revealed gaff for Tuesday, May 5. The gaff is that the creators sliced an extra piece of footage into the title sequence. It shows Kate and Drew jamming to the "Cleveland Rocks" tune. I did have this one my list so it wasn't a suprise. The explanation given on the Official Drew Carey Show Website did amuse me, however. The maintainers of the website explained that the footage was a gaff because . . . all the footage for the title sequence is shot in Cleveland (and therefore, the footage of the set is wrong because the set is in California)!

Now, this makes perfect sense if you are viewing it from a GlossyWorld perspective. You know the set is an illusion and it's in California. But from our perspective--in order to enjoy the show--we're supposed to forget that the set is in California and believe that it's in Cleveland. In other words, the creators of the Drew Carey Show have worked for three years to convince us that Drew's office is in Cleveland but when they cut the footage in amongst real footage of Cleveland for an April Fools show, we're supposed to instantly switch gears and recognize that this is a gaff because the set is in California!

I don't know about you but . . . that makes me smile!

Saturday, May 9, 1998

A minor addition. When the Amazing Nitwit made his predictions for the gaffs that would be revealed from May 6 through May 16, the Amazing Nitwit assumed that when the maintainer of the website said they would reveal one gaff a day, they meant they would release one gaff a day. Silly Nitwit, how did you ever come to that conclusion!

The explanation for today's revealled gaff actually confirms two--count 'em, two--gaffs so we need to add "Poles in the Sink" to the confirmed list!

Wednesday, May 13, 1998

When the Amazing Nitwit made his predictions for May 6 through May 16 on the amazing day of May 5, he mentioned that he was a bit unclear as to what his vision held for the prediction of May 13. Now that the Official Drew Carey Show Website has finally revealed this gaff, the Amazing Nitwit notes that his prediction has been, once again, proven ONE HUNDRED PERCENT correct! It's amazing, I tell you. Truly amazing! (Snicker, snicker.)

Saturday, May 16, 1998

Once again astonished members of the web community audience, it's time the Amazing Nitwit to make his predictions for gaffs that will be revealed on the Official Drew Carey Show website in the coming days.

Unfortunately, the Amazing Nitwit's vision for tomorrow's relevation is a bit unclear. It could be one of more of the following:

109. Drew's Lawn Chair 00:12:38
110. Abe Lincoln's Visit 00:12:38

However, the Amazing Nitwit is certain of his predictions for the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They are:

Revealed 5/18/98: 102. Another Picture For Mimi 00:11:30
Revealed 5/19/98: 103. "Mr. Bell" 00:12:28
Revealed 5/20/98: 085. Kate's Mismatched Shoes 00:10:27

Also, the Amazing Nitwit predicts the the confirmation of the following gaff on Thursday (hopefully, along with the rest of the items on the Official Producers List):

084. Not Potato Chips, Carrot Chips! 00:10:18

Should you doubt the Amazing Nitwit's ability to predict these gaffs, remember that the Amazing Nitwit's accuracy rating with respect to his previous predictions has been ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. It's AMAZING!

Sunday, May 17, 1998

Yesterday, the Amazing Nitwit made an unclear prediction for today. In fact, the reveales gaffs for today are:

XXX. Larry's Toupee 00:12:38
110. Abe Lincoln's Visit 00:12:38

Now this is where it's starts getting sticky. Since I'm not a Drewhead, I obviously didn't know that Larry is normally bald. However, I did note the fact that Larry loses his toupee only moments after appearing in this scene. But does that count? My guess is that the Official Producers List will only contain the Larry's Toupee gaff and not the "Larry Loses His Toupee" gaff. Hmmm.

For now, I'll expect the worse. I'll count the toupee stuff as another miss.

Monday, May 18, 1998

The gaffs revealed today included not only the gaff predicted by The Amazing Nitwit (102. Another Picture For Mimi 00:11:30) but also:

010. Mimi's Old-Style Phone 00:01:36

Wednesday, May 20, 1998, 4:45 PM

Well, the creators uploaded their official list this morning! Hmmm. Double Hmmm. I missed fourteen!. Unbelievable. But, unfortunately . . . explainable.

First things first, I have gone through the list and marked all the ones that I had that are on the Official Producer's List. There's eighty-two of them. (Grumble, grumble.)

And now for the fourteen I missed:

**XXX. Missing Overhead Light Fixtures 00:01:00 (Possibly could have gotten this one!)
**XXX. Kitchen Table Exchange 00:07:24 (Should have gotten this one.)
**XXX. Ice Cream? 00:09:22 (?)
**XXX. Warsaw not Berlin (Should have gotten this one.)
**XXX. Cactus Coat Rack 00:12:31 (Should have gotten this one.)
**XXX. Larry's Toupee 00:12:38 (Only a Drewhead would know!)
**XXX. Milk Carton On Clock 00:12:43 (Should have gotten this one.)
**XXX. Baking Soda On Speaker 00:12:50 (Should have gotten this one.)
**XXX. Oswald's Faulty Memory 00:14:07 (Only a Drewhead would know!)
**XXX. Drew's Faulty Memory 00:15:18 (Only a Drewhead would know!)
**XXX. Film Scratches 00:15:45 (This was subtle.)
**XXX. The Chicago Skyline (Should have gotten this one.)
**XXX. "Airplains" Instead of "Airplanes" 00:25:02 (Should have gotten this one.)
**XXX. Drew's Flipping Mug 00:25:16 (Should have gotten this one.)

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to gripe about all the stuff that wasn't on the list! Aside from the MAJOR continuity stuff that wasn't on the list (even though the mug switching hands was), there are a few items not included that are true conundrums to me. For instance:

028. Missing Drew's Plant 00:04:28. Okay, here's the deal. During the ads that lead up to the April Fools Show, the creators paid special attention to Drew's plant. They highlighted it with arrows! Yet, when the plant is missing on the episode? It's not on the list!

051. Drew's New Refrigerator 00:07:28. And then there's the "study guide" on the website. The one that was suppose to help those who weren't regular viewers of the show. As one among many differences between the pictures and the April Fools Show, Drew has an old refrigerator in the picture but a new one on the show. Guess what? It's NOT on the list!

And absolutely worst of all, however:

081. Squawk! 00:10:08. The creators dubbed in a squawk. They dubbed it in and it's NOT ON THE LIST! Is this absolutely unbelievable to anyone else?!!

Anyway, the Amazing Nitwit will now make his final prediction: Phil Farrand will not with the Drew Carey Show Contest! (You just can't afford to miss 14 with 300,000 people entering.)

Thursday, May 21, 1998

And once again, dear friends, the Amazing Nitwit is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CORRECT! (I should have had him enter the contest! ;-)

Congratulations to Daniel Daubner and Mary Haren for winning the top two prizes. The Official ABC Website details Daniel's technique and it would make any nitpicker's heart proud. He taped the shows prior to the April Fools Contest (which I should have done as well!). He set up two VCRs, gathered his wife and other family members and they went at it. Of course, they live in Ohio so that helped a bit and they watched the episode seven or eight times! Perfect form!

Daniel matched an incredible ninety-five out of the ninety-six "official" gaffs!

There is one final irony in all this! One of the reasons I didn't put more time into this entry was because I needed to get back to work on the Star Wars Nitpicker's Guide!

Life is funny like that.

My Entry For the Drew Carey April Fools Contest
