On vacation!

Monday, December 29, 1997

On vacation! Last week, I uploaded more reflections and nits for Mortal Coil and added a plot summary since I finally saw the episode!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: The Brash Reflections for the third season of Voyager are officially frozen. However, you may feel free to send in additional nits for the episodes. I will keep the information for future reference and possible inclusion in a Voyager Nitpicker's Guide. Also frozen are Trials and Tribble-ations, along with all movie files. Also, aside from "Trials and Tribble-ations"--which was a special case, there aren't any Brash Reflections for DS9 on the website. Sorry. Just don't have the time to do another series and I started with Voyager when I started the homepage.

I back! Just go through getting caught up with my email so I'm rushing this morning because I would like to write some today. (Didn't get much done over the holidays but a good time was had by all!)

Concerning the nit from Doug Brook that I mention in last weeks "This Week . . ." column, Donald Carlson wrote: I just returned from seeing TITANIC for the second time, paying close attention to whether Cameron made a boo-boo with the fourth stack. He didn't. Only the first three stacks emit coal smoke; funnel 4 emits only steam and white smoke, consistent with venting from the galleys and kitchens.

The proof is in a remarkable shot that takes place when Jack and his friend are at the bow of the ship. Soon after Jack makes his "I'm the king of the world!" yell, the camera pulls back from him on the bow with his outstretched arms, flies back over the bridge, over the top of the ship and OVER the stacks. Notably, it goes right over stack #4, and you can clearly see it is a dummy, with most of the opening closed off and only some pipes venting out smoke to the front of the opening. What may be misleading is this shot continues over the ship and swoops down to near sea level, showing the Titanic steaming away from the camera. At this angle, oblique to the stacks, it appears all of them are giving off coal smoke, but what you are seeing is smoke BEHIND stack #4, not smoke COMING from #4.

By the way, this is a TERRIFIC movie, and I urge all nitpickers (or anyone) to go see it.

Jeffrey Hall wrote last week with a fun nit from the movie The Man Who Would Be King: In the pivotal scene when Sean Connery gets shot with that arrow, in the long shot, the arrow appeared to be broken, but in the close shots on either side of it, the arrow is full and complete, and then after he pulls it out a full arrow, he carries a full arrow until the end of the scene.

However; since Santa didn't give me that high tech PhilipsMagnavox DVD player - and "The Man Who Would be King" probably isn't on DVD - I can't be sure. ;->
